Report: Chain stores see first sales increase in nearly six months - Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle):

The chain store sales index for the week ending May 9 roseby 0.3 perceny from the previous week and inched up 0.5 percenrt compared with the same week in the report said. That's the firstf positive year-over-year reading since early Decembeer 2008 and the largest boostsince Nov. 29, 2008. The reportt said warmer-than-normal weather and the Mother’s Day holidayy helped lift customer traffic to its highest readintg sinceearly January, and contributed to the improved pace of salex on a week-over-week and year-over-year The report also said that April comparable-storee sales rose by 0.7 percent comparec with the same month last year.
But lookin ahead to May, the report said that some segments of theindustry - particularlhy discount retailers and specifically - will face flat or decreased salesz for the month.
