Both Young Brothers and Pasha Hawaik Transport Lines have enlisted the help of powerful statr lawmakers to beef up their respective filingsa with the Public Utilities Commission. At least two of those lawmakers are working both sidexs ofthe issue. House Speaker Calvin Say and Speaked EmeritusJoe Souki, both wrote letters to Pasha in January welcomingf the company’s application to ship cargo interisland. The letters, datex Jan. 28 (Souki) and Jan. 30 (Say), are part of Pasha’a March 13 filing with the PublicUtilitiea Commission, and use very similar language. But something happened after those letterswere sent.
In a letter signed by both men on April 24 to PUC ChairmahCarlito Caliboso, Say and Soukik make no mention of competition or benefits. They do ask that the PUC considerd including YoungBrothers (“the State’s primary interisland/intrastate cargo shipper”) as a party to the Pashas proceeding. And they endorswe “a full and fair to help the PUC make adecision “whicjh is in the best public interest.
” A check with the statw Campaign Spending Commission shows that currently chairman of the House Transportatiohn Committee, has received more than $5,000 in totap contributions over the past decade from Young sister company Hawaiian Tug & Barge, and Matsoj Navigation Co. The most recent payment $1,000 from Young Brothers — was March 24, 2008.
